Our Story, Goals & Objectives
Globally, 1 in 100 children are born with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and in Nigeria, cases of CHD are 3.5 to 14 per 1000 live births. The journey for a Nigerian child born with CHD is often met with immense challenges. From delayed diagnoses and the high cost of life-saving surgeries, to limited specialized medical facilities and trained professionals, it is a silent crisis that affects countless families, often leading to despair and death.
It was from this deeply felt understanding that the Congenital Heart Disease Foundation of Nigeria (CHDFNigeria) was born. We are a non-governmental organisation founded in 2020 to serve as a beacon of hope and a lifeline for countless individuals and families navigating the challenges of congenital heart defects. Founded with passion and purpose, our organization is dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults born with heart diseases across Nigeria.
At CHDFNigeria, we understand CHD is not just a medical diagnosis – it is a journey that touches every aspect of life. Our aim is to raise awareness, increase early detection of CHD, provide comprehensive support, and ensure access to quality treatment and care for those affected by CHD. We work tirelessly to bridge gaps in healthcare, advocate for patient rights, and educate communities about prevention, early detection, and management of CHD.
Driven by a network of medical professionals, caregivers, volunteers, heart warriors and heart families, CHDFNigeria desires to provide hope, support, and tangible solutions. Through outreach programs, fundraising initiatives, and partnerships, we work to create a world where every individual with a congenital heart condition receives the treatment and support they need.

Who & Why We Serve
Who we serve
- CHD warriors (people who have been diagnosed of congenital heart disease/defect) and their families
- The general public who needs information about heart related matters
- Healthcare professionals practicing in the cardiac field or those interested in advancing their cardiac/ cardiology knowledge.
Why do we serve?
We are driven by a sense of responsibility and belief that every child in Nigeria deserves a chance to live a full, healthy, and fulfilling life, regardless of their socioeconomic background or the challenges they face at birth. Our dedication to serving stems from an understanding of the problem and a commitment to being part of the solution.
- In a country with Nigeria’s large population, thousands of children are born with CHD each year. Tragically, many of these children go undiagnosed or untreated, leading to severe health complications, and most times, premature death. Access to specialized cardiac care, including diagnosis, intervention, and surgery is limited across the country, particularly for low-income families. We want to fill the gap in access to care and ensure that every child has equal access to quality cardiac care.
- A CHD diagnosis can be emotionally and financially devastating for families. Parents often face feelings of fear, uncertainty, and anxiety as they navigate complex medical information and struggle to afford the necessary care. The financial burden of treatment can push families into poverty, forcing them to make impossible choices between their child’s health and basic necessities. The emotional toll on family members is also significant. We want to make sure financial constraints do not prevent individuals from receiving the care they need, and build safe and supportive communities where heart families can share their experiences, learn from one another, and cope with the challenges they face.
- CHD cases that go untreated place a burden on Nigeria’s healthcare system. Individuals with CHD often require frequent hospital visits, emergency care, and long-term medical management. We want to invest in early diagnosis and treatment of CHD to not only saves lives but also reduce the burden on the healthcare system.
