In 2025, The Congenital Heart Disease Foundation of Nigeria (CHDFNigeria), in collaboration with the Freehearts Africa Reach Out Foundation (FAROF) and other implementing partners, carried out a life-impacting heart screening and treatment outreach in Kaduna State, Nigeria. This outreach was a journey of hope, compassion, and early intervention for underserved communities.
In many of such communities across Nigeria, access to quality healthcare remains a daily struggle – especially for women and children. In Northwest Nigeria, where maternal and child mortality rates remain alarmingly high, the need for urgent intervention is undeniable.
As such, from May 1st to 3rd, 2025, hope came alive in Rafinguza (Kaduna North LGA) and Nasarawa (Chikun LGA) as a three-day free medical outreach was carried out in these selected communities. Over the course of the three days, more than 1,700 individuals were reached across both communities, with children making up a significant portion of those served.
From the very first point of contact, beneficiaries received comprehensive care, including registration, vital signs checks, and medical consultations, all completely free. This outreach went beyond basic healthcare. It was a holistic intervention designed to meet urgent and diverse needs:
- General Health Services
1,165 individuals received consultations and treatment for common but potentially life-threatening conditions such as malaria, respiratory infections, and pneumonia.
- Child Health Interventions
Over 300 children were treated for pneumonia and diarrheal diseases, conditions that, if left untreated, can be fatal.
- Heart Screening
As part of the mission to combat congenital heart disease, both children and adults underwent heart screenings. Several cases requiring further investigation were identified, creating an opportunity for early intervention and life-saving care.
- Eye Care Services
About 500 women received eye screenings, with many provided with corrective glasses or treatment – restoring not just sight, but dignity and daily functionality.
- Nutrition Support
With Nigeria facing a growing malnutrition crisis, children were screened and enrolled into nutrition programs, receiving therapeutic food and essential supplements to support recovery and growth.
- Family Planning & Reproductive Health
Women were empowered with knowledge, counselling, and access to family planning services – equipping them to make informed health decisions.
This impactful outreach was made possible through collaboration with partners, proving that when organizations unite around a shared purpose, lives can truly be transformed.
For many beneficiaries, this outreach was a lifeline, not just a medical exercise. Families who could not afford healthcare were given access to specialist consultations, medications, screenings, and follow-up care, all at no cost. For some, it meant early detection of serious conditions. For others, it meant relief from long-standing health challenges. For all, it meant hope.
While screenings are important, our work does not end there. CHDFNigeria remains committed to ensuring that identified cases receive the care they need. We actively worked with Baraudikko Teaching Hospital to continue assessments and facilitate necessary treatments. Our aim is clear: to see every identified patient through to successful care, even if it means life-saving surgery.
No doubt, this outreach is a reminder of the power of collaboration and the importance of accessible healthcare. Early detection can change lives, and through initiatives like this, we are bringing that possibility closer to communities that need it most. At CHDFNigeria, we will continue to reach, screen, and support because every heart deserves a chance to beat strong.
